A week of sports
They say "Life comes full circle". It certainly was the case on 07th August, when everyone gathered in the sports field in their stream T-shirts once again after a period of 10 months since the sports day in O-week. Yesterday was the MBA Olympics - a grand finale of the sporting activities that have happened throughout the MBA.
As expected (at least by 1/3rd of the batch), the Red stream won the competition. I had put my name for two events: Tennis and Cricket. And whats more we won both. The Tennis win was particularly special, as this was the second time in my life I held the tennis racket in my hands. You will notice that from a glance at the picture below. Joe (my Term 1 learning team mate) & I played four doubles matches against some of the regulars from the other streams and we won three of those matches. It certainly established that "You don’t need the skill to win. You need the will to win." (Amit Kapoor, 2007). The second game was cricket. Again, Red stream won both the matches defeating the greens and the blues. The match against the greens went to the wire with Reds needing 4 to win in the last 2 balls. Joe hoicked the penultimate ball for a four towards, mid-on and got us to victory. I missed the events after that. I understand that the Apple Bobber competition and the Welly Wanger competitions were also quite interesting and so were football and rounders. Reds continued their poor record in the relays and ended last there. I didn’t see this one, but I remember the relay race in the O-week when Arturo was tripping time & again in the last-leg of the race (sack racing) & we ended a minute later than the other streams.
And by the way, the current MBA batch also won the traditional match played every year against the alumni. We were chasing 183 in 40 overs, and won by 7 wickets thanks to an unbeaten 140+ runs partnership between SJ & Captain Sharad. If things go as planned, some us will be back to play it next year as alumni ourselves.
Just in passing, also wanted to mention that Cranstock - a musical event happened on Saturday. Very well organised by Thomas. The Oligopolists (Cranfield MBA band) performed, as did three other professional bands. I sang "You really got me". It was fun.![]()
