WAC & more
Had our final WAC last weekend. Probably the most interesting one. We were asked to analyse the current state of economy on a country anywhere in the world in the capacity of a candidate who is applying for the role of a chief economic advisor to the Govt. of that country. I chose China, just out of interest. It was a brave choice (you would know why, if you get you economics fundamentals straight and then study China). Not surprisingly, I was the only one in the class to choose China. But it was a marvellous exercise.
Another highlight of the week were the lectures on People Management, specifically Employee Relations - I and II. In the first session, we had an HR Manager from Centrica talk to us about how HR was managed at Centrica and how they managed the people side of things when Centrica decided to embrace ‘offshoring’. However, one of the biggest focus of his sessions was the growing irrelevance of trade unions and why they are such a nuisance. While we would have believed that and made our our own perceptions, in employee relations - II, we had the Assistant General Secretary from one of the Trade Unions come to talk to us and give us his perspectives about the existence of trade unions. The next session, from our faculty will combine both these perspectives and give us a more balanced view. I was quite impressed by this mode of delivery, to first hear it from practitioners and then sum it up.
By the way, I am quite ecstatic today, having been selected by Deloitte for their final round assessment centre.. had my on-campus interview on Thursday… that probably explains my abstinence from this blog for a while now. That will probably happen after my vacation, as the date they suggested clashes with my vacation.
